Leading director files case against Jigarthanda producer!
One of the leading directors of Kollywood, Karthik Subbaraj came in to limelight for the first time. Going into the details, it is known that the Hindi remake rights of Karthik Subbaraj directorial venture Jigarthanda were sold for a whopping price.
It seems that all is not well between Karthik Subbaraj and Jigarthanda producer Kathiresan. Karthik Subbaraj issued a press statement regarding this:
"Dear All,
I, Karthik Subbaraj extend my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the press and media for their continuous support in all my ventures. My second feature film, JIGARTHANDA, is declared hit from both viewer’s side and critics’ side. The main reason is all your positive reviews in the press and media. Today, I would bring into your attention about a glitch in selling the remake rights of the movie by producer Mr. S. Kathiresan.
As per the contract I signed for the movie, it was assured that I will be given 40% of the revenue generated through selling the Hindi language remake rights. It recently came to my attention that Mr. Kathiresan had tried to seal the deal without my knowledge.
I filed a complaint with Tamil Nadu Film Director’s Union on this issue and through the union we conducted several meetings with members of the Producer’s Council to settle the issue amicably within four doors. Unfortunately, there is no such intention showed from Mr. S. Kathiresan to settle the issue.
At last, as per the instructions from director’s union I had to take the last resort of going to our judicial system to seek justice. Following which, I filed a case in Madras High Court and now the court has issued Stay Order in selling the remake rights of the movie till 11th June 2015"
The Madras High Court issued a stay order till June 11th and restrained Kathiresan for violating Karthik Subbaraj’s copyright in the film.

After producer Kathiresan bypassed the contract that he initially signed with Karthik Subbaraj to share with him 40% of revenue from the Hindi remake rights of Jigarthanda, Karthik filed a complaint in the directors’ union to settle the issue amicably. Since, the outcome is not fruitful, he has resorted to legal measures and now the Madras HC has issued stay order for producer Kathiresan to sell the remake rights in Hindi.

At last, As per the instructions from director’s union I had to take last resort of going to our judicial system to seek justice. Following which, i fled a case in Madras High Court and now the court has issued Stay Order in selling the remake rights of the movie,” Karthik added.
The following is the note I got from my lawyer which i’m giving for the press perusal.
“Madras High Court on 21st May 2015 stayed the remake of multi-crore blockbuster hit Tamil film Jigarthanda directed and written by Director Karthik Subbaraj and starring Siddarth and Lakshmi Menon. The stay has been granted until 11th June 2015 on a petition by Karthik Subbaraj alleging violation of agreement and copyright infringement by the producer Five Star Films pvt. Ltd. Represented by S.Kathiresan.
Justice R Mahadevan granted the interim injunction on a petition by Karthik Subbaraj alleging breach of payment terms and other contractual obligations by the producer resulting in copyright violation of Karthik Subbaraj, who is the Director and Story-writer of the film.
The judge restrained the producer Five Star Films, from in any manner infringing Karthik Subbaraj’s copyright in the film, by in any manner, selling, advertising and offering to sell the remake rights in any language including Hindi language till June 11. He issued notice to the producer and directed them to flee their response by them.”
Accuses producer of short-changing him by selling the Hindi-remake without his knowledge
Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj has obtained a stay on the Hindi remake of his smash hit Tamil film, Jigarthanda, which managed to do well at the box office and get noticed by the critics.

He claims in the statement: “As per the contract I signed for the movie, it was assured that I will be given 40 per cent of the revenue generated through selling the Hindi language remake rights. It recently came to my attention that Mr. Kathiresan had tried to seal the deal without my knowledge.”
Despite taking the matter to Tamil Nadu Film Directors’ Association and the Tamil Film Producers Council, Mr. Subbaraj claims that he couldn’t bring the producer to the negotiating table. “I then approached the Madras High Court, which has issued a stay until June 11, 2015,” he says.

Director Karthik Subbaraj gets stay order on Sajid Nadiadwala’s Hindi remake of Jigarthanda!
The remake of popular Tamil film has ran into trouble after the director blamed the producer to have sold the rights without his consent
Sajid Nadiadwala, who turned director with Salman Khan’s Kick last year, is on a spree to buy remake rights of South Indian films. After attaining the remake rights of Telugu blockbuster Magadheera, Nadiadwala has now bought the remake rights of Siddharth starrer Jigarthanda.
But it looks like the Hindi remake of Jigarthanda is all set to run into trouble even before its inception. The director of Jigarthanda, Karthik Subbaraj, has filed a stay order on the Hindi remake stating that he was completely unaware of producer Kathiresan selling remake rights to Sajid Nadiadwala. ” As per the contract I signed for the movie, it was assured that I will be given 40 percent of the revenue generated through selling the Hindi language remake rights. It recently came to my attention that Kathiresan had tried to seal the deal without my knowledge,” said Subbaraj to media.
Karthik Subbaraj stated that he was forced to look for an interim injunction as producer Kathiresan was not ready to settle the issue amicably even after discussing it in front of Tamil Nadu Film Directors’ Association and Tamil Film Producers Council.
