Jigarthanda

Karthik takes on Jigarthanda producer
Director Karthik Subbaraj is upset with Kathiresan, the producer of Jigarthanda, after the later sold the film's Hindi remake rights for a huge amount to Bollywood producer Sajid Nadiadwala. A trustworthy source close to Karthik tells us that the director was not even kept in the loop by the producer regarding this development. The source elaborates, "Karthik actually owns 40 per cent of the film's remake rights but was not involved in the process of selling the rights of the film. In fact, Kathiresan did not even inform him about the decision to sell the film to Sajid."
Now, Karthik has filed a complaint with the Directors' Union against the producer. While Karthik preferred to not talk about this issue, Kathiresan was not available for comment despite repeated attempts.
It is to be noted that things were not well between the producer and the director even at the time of the film's release. The reason alleged at that time was that the producer had tried to force Karthik into cutting the film so that it received a U certificate for tax exemption purposes. However, Karthik stood his ground and the film was eventually released with a UA certificate.
Jigarthanda director Karthik Subbaraj set to fight it out with Kathiresan over remake rights sale!
Kathiresan apparently sold the remake rights of Jigarthanda to Sajid Nadiadwala
Jigarthanda was a blockbuster last year and accolades poured in for its director Karthik Subbaraj and lead actors Siddharth and Bobby Simha. The latest news is that the producer of the film, Kathiresan, has sold the Hindi remake rights of this film to well-known producer Sajid Nadiadwala for a whopping amount.
However, sources now state that director Karthik Subbaraj – who owns 40 percent of the movie’s rights – has not been involved or included in the decision to sell the Hindi remake rights. Apparently, the producer has made the decision on his own to sell the Hindi remake rights though the director owns a hefty share.
According to sources, this issue on the sale of remake rights had already been raised by Karrthik Subbaraj in the directors’ union earlier. It looks like the union had mandated that the remake rights of a film cannot be sold without the writer’s knowledge and since Karthik Subbaraj is also the writer of this film, he should have been included in this decision.
There were reports earlier that Karthik himself would direct the Hindi version of the film. Now that Kathiresan has sold the rights without the director/ writer’s involvement, this issue is likely to go the directors union again to be sorted out. Wonder if Sajid Nadiadwala will pull out of the project or take Karthik on board as director.
'Jigarthanda' Hindi remake hits a roadblock
For producer-turned-director Sajid Nadiadwala, bagging remake rights of South Indian movies is nothing new. After Salman Khan's Kick, which is the remake of Telugu film by the same name, we had earlier reported about the director was gearing up to remake Magadheera with Shahid Kapoor in the lead.
Now, we hear that the producer of Jigarthanda has sold the remake rights of the Tamil hit film to Sajid Nadiadwala for a never-before-heard price. But then, there is trouble. Karthik Subbaraj, the director of the original, is reportedly upset with producer Kathiresan for selling the rights to Nadiadwala without his consent.
Karthik had written and directed the film that went onto to achieve a cult status. However, the director was not part of the discussions over remake rights. It is also reported that being the owner of the script, Karthik holds 40 per cent ownership of the movie.
Earlier, there were hints that Karthik himself would direct the film in Hindi. But with the latest developments, it is almost certain that he is not in the picture.
We will also have to wait a while to see who are reprising the characters Karthik and 'Assault' Sethu in the Hindi remake. In the original, these roles were done to perfection by Siddharth and Bobby Simhaa respectively.
Jigarthanda was a box office hit and it won much critical acclaim too. Bobby Simha, who played the dreaded gangster 'Assault' Sethu in the film, won the National Award for Best Supporting Actor this year.
The musical gangster flick tracks the life of a young aspiring filmmaker who follows a real life gangster in search of a solid story, but instead finds himself in a pickle when the gangster insists to be the hero of the film.
