Кинорежиссеры Шанкер Раман и Паван Кумар присоединились к Дипе Мехта для работы над индийским сериалом Leila, официально объявленным сегодня Netflix.
В основу сюжета сериала положен одноименный роман Праяга Акбара 2017 года «Leila». События происходят в ближайшем будущем, повествование следует за матерью, разыскивающей дочь, потерянную одним трагическим летом 16 лет назад. «Обходя системы наблюдения и бандитские перестрелки, Шалини - когда-то богатая, возможно, со странным прошлым - теперь в положении изгоя, доведенном до крайности, живет только своим поиском», - говорится в официальном резюме серии.
Премьера сериала из шести эпизодов состоится в 2019 году.
Раман дебютировал с фильмом Gurgaon (2017) с Панкаджем Трипати в главной роли и более двух десятилетий работал кинооператором. Кумар был режиссером известных фильмов на языке Каннада - Люсия (2014) и U-Turn (2016). Мехта, индо-канадский режиссер, известна своими трилогиями «Огонь» (1996), «Земля» (1998) и «Вода» (2005).

Deepa Mehta, Shanker Raman and Pawan Kumar to direct Netflix original series ‘Leila’
The series is based on Prayaag Akbar’s dystopian novel of the same name.
Filmmakers Shanker Raman and Pawan Kumar have joined Deepa Mehta to direct Netflix’s upcoming Indian series Leila, the streaming giant announced on Thursday.
Based on Prayaag Akbar’s 2017 dystopian novel of the same name, Leila, set in the near future, follows a mother in search of her daughter from whom she was separated 16 years ago. “Skirting surveillance systems and thuggish repeaters, Shalini – once wealthy, with perhaps a wayward past; now a misfit, pushed to the margins – is propelled only by her search,” according to the official synopsis of the series.
Screenwriter and documentary filmmaker Urmi Juvekar (Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!) will serve as the showrunner, while Mehta is the creative executive producer. Huma Qureshi is playing the lead. The six-episode series will be premiered in 2019.
Raman made his directorial debut last year with Gurgaon, starring Pankaj Tripathi, and has worked as a cinematographer for over two decades. Kumar has directed the acclaimed Kannada films Lucia (2014) and U-Turn (2016). Mehta, an Indo-Canadian filmmaker, is known for her Elements trilogy Fire (1996), Earth (1998), and Water (2005).
Leila joins Netflix’s growing slate of Indian original series, of which Sacred Games and Ghoul were released this year. In the pipeline are adaptations of Bilal Siddiqi’s Bard of Blood, Aravind Adiga’s Selection Day (out on December 28) and Binky Mendez’s Crocodile.

Mumbai: Filmmaker Deepa Mehta has been roped in by Netflix to direct its upcoming Indian original series 'Leila', starring Huma Qureshi.
Deepa Mehta, who is known for critically acclaimed trilogy 'Fire', 'Earth' and 'Water', will also serve as the creative executive producer for the show. The team of directors also includes Shanker Raman and Pawan Kumar.
Sharing the news, Mehta wrote on Twitter alongside a picture with the team, "With stunning lead @humasqureshi and a crew to die for. Cinematographer Johan Adit and First A.D Vamsi Krishna @NetflixIndia #Leila"
Huma Qureshi had earlier shared a photo of herself and Deepa Mehta, sharing her excitement about her new project.
While Mehta is the creative executive producer, screenwriter Urmi Juvekar, whose past credits include 'Oye Lucky! Lucky! Lucky Oye!' and 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy', is serving as the showrunner on the six-episode series.
Set in a dystopian world, the series will follow Shalini, a mother in search of her daughter Leila whom she lost one tragic summer.
Based on a book by Prayaag Akbar, the series starts streaming in 2019.
